Contemporary art aluminium foam installation

It has been a great honour to receive an invitation to take part in the ArtMill Ferency Museum Centre, Hungary to create a design for the interior walls/stands for the contemporary art exhibition rooms. The artist envisioned a space where the exhibited sculptures would be illuminated only by light filtering through the ceiling and walls without using any additional light fixtures. Therefore, it was important to source a decorative wall clad material with transparent attributes that would achieve the desired lighting effect. Further challenges were imposed by the restrictions of creating a unified evenly lit lighting surface, without having fixing elements casting shadows onto the walls and the ceiling.

Decorative lighting wall and ceiling elements

The decorative lighting wall element required a specially fabricated supporting fixture to be able to effectively fix and hold the bespoke 3m tall aluminium foam panels. We used a polycarbonate sheet in between the RGB LED lights and the panels to diffuse the LED ‘hotspots’ and evenly spread the light through the bubbles without sacrificing any light transmission. The sculpture supporting stands were also fabricated using aluminium foam panels, of course!
The internationally recognised contemporary, modern art gallery’s exhibition room’s area is 160m2. The Aluinvent two-side-open (LO2) version of the aluminium foam panel’s ability to allow light to penetrate through makes it the perfect choice to use for backlit LED lighting installations.
